About The Old Newbie Project

It seems like an eternity ago, my buddies at AOL in the Cyberwriting Class urged me to unify the ramblings and mistaken starts I'd made all over the Net. Actually, it was only a few years, but in internet time that is ages. There have been changes in the Net and in my life. Still, the project continues with newer old friends, with stops and starts and side trips, with new Host sites and new technology.

The process of learning can never stop -- it is a marvelous adventure, frustrating at times, but always worth the effort. You are welcome to join me in looking into Windows and exploring the possibilities. What started as my personal attempt to figure out my own computer has grown into a much larger and ambitious effort to see what the Net can do and share what I've found.

The pages listed in the sidebar navigation will be about my project. Though I may mention the specific Hosts and discuss them, their advantages and drawbacks, keep in mind that is peripheral.

Though you are allowed to learn from my mistakes too.

The online patch of weeds
Some cyber geography and a note about space on the web. Beyond a Domain Name, you need some actual place to put a website which is a collection of linked files. The place is a computer (usually not your own, but one) where you rent space.

  • Old Newbie Org is hosted by a friend I've never met named Lamar who made me a deal I couldn't refuse.
  • Old Newbie Net is hosted by Bravenet.com which remains a good source for free web tools, created by Brad & Dave.
  • Old Newbie Com is hosted by Freewebs.com which was a nice small vendor with a novel presentation of a good idea - give away a free and easily useable space with personal support and folks will recognize it. Latley they've grown.
  • Old Newbie Info is hosted by Kevin, a friend and associate who offers reasonably priced packages and great support at Overland Web Hosting.

The original scheme of Domain Names

When the internet was younger, the plan was to identify Domains by the last letters - .org being non profit organization,  .net being ISPs and .com being companies engaged in commerce. None of which took thought of the personal website which now has grown to be a sizeable part of the market.

 Confessions of the Old Newbie

When I began to write, I was content to use free spaces and found there was a wealth of places available without spending a cent. But there is no free lunch, and many sites added banners and stuff I found distracting. Also many good places had limits and restrictions which, as I grew, I found increasingly bothersome. It would be good to say that I made an intelligent decision after evaluating all the resources and chose wisely. That wasn't the way it developed.

In all honesty, I blundered into Old Newbie Org, my first domain purchase, in an unfortunate series of accidents and misunderstandings. It was, in part, my ISP's fault, but the blame was mostly my own impatience and a desire to be free of ads. I went with their recommendation and a basic package and found it suitable, but with strictures I wasn't comfortable using. Eventually, I wanted more control. The Org has been the most moved of my Domain Names living on a total of five different Servers through four different companies.

Old Newbie Net was my second error of haste. While I was moving the Org, I opted to pick up both the Com and Net domain names. I could say it was a planned effort to create a Brand name, but it wasn't that clearly reasoned. I just rankled at the thought my friends might be mislead by some unscrupulous web developer who pounced on the available names. I chose to host them at places where I was pleased with the free space. Unfortunately, Net was placed prematurely and had to be relocated.

Old Newbie Com has been the most continuously hosted of my Domains and it was a difficult choice, when I wanted to test new spots, but poor judgement won out and I acquired more Domain Names.

Old Newbie Info was acquired before the Host space where it lives, in conjunction with Old Newbie Biz which remains parked out of the reach of other developers.

AsparaGus Patch Com is the newest of my Domains and it was provided free with the Office Live beta, thanks Bill.
